BIMkeeper combines IFC2x3- en IFC4.x-models and counts

Multiple IFC models, different versions—all brought together into a single, comprehensive overview. BIMkeeper not only displays IFC2x3 and IFC4.x models within a unified 3D viewer but also aggregates the associated data. This combined approach makes it easier to analyze building information, compare models, and identify issues that might otherwise be difficult to spot.

Displaying multiple IFC2x3 and IFC4.x models simultaneously in a web browser has been possible for some time. However, reliably combining the associated quantities has not always been straightforward. BIMkeeper has now successfully addressed this challenge as well.

Achieving this requires more than a well-defined IDS (Information Delivery Specification). The way IFC files are exported and how BIMkeeper processes the information also play an important role.

A practical example is combining multiple models containing solar panels. Once the IFC files have been loaded, BIMkeeper immediately displays the total number of solar panels and the combined maximum power output of all PV installations. Information from different models and IFC versions is brought together in a single overview.

Multiple models combined quickly

Even when working with several large models, it typically takes less than 30 seconds for the viewer to display the 3D visualization and associated quantities. There is no need to merge the IFC files beforehand.

However, the files must first be converted into the BIMkeeper format. This conversion only needs to be performed once, after which the models can be used in the viewer.

One workflow for different IFC versions

IFC2x3 and IFC4.x differ in their underlying structure. They use different schemas, entities, and relationships. To process their information together, BIMkeeper translates the different versions into a single, shared internal model.

This allows the application to combine and present data from various IFC files independently of their original IFC versions. The visualization logic remains consistent, regardless of the source format.

All key functionalities remain available as well. Users can select and search individual IFC files, but they can also perform searches and make selections across all loaded models simultaneously. This works regardless of the file format or IFC version.

One federated model, faster identification of discrepancies

The ability to view different IFC versions together offers practical advantages when coordinating and comparing building models. For example, a structural model in IFC2x3 can be displayed alongside MEP and piping models in IFC4.x as a single federated model.

Users therefore do not need to convert their files to the same IFC version before viewing them together. By displaying the models and their associated information in context, discrepancies and potential conflicts can be identified more quickly. It also becomes easier to compare buildings and models based on a wide range of characteristics.

Converting IFC2x3 to IFC4.x: not always necessary

Some users consider converting all IFC2x3 files within BIMkeeper to IFC4.x. However, this is not always necessary.

If the conversion does not provide additional information and there is no specific need for data or functionality that requires the IFC4 format, upgrading these files adds little value within the BIMkeeper application. Combining different IFC versions already provides the required capabilities, without having to convert all source files to a single version first.

**The key takeaway:** BIMkeeper brings different IFC versions together in one integrated working environment, including their associated quantities, search functions, and selection capabilities. This makes working with federated models easier and more efficient, without unnecessary conversion steps.
